SHELLS video

About a month ago SHELLS opened for the Rainbow Vomit Family Band and Minus 9 at the historic Arbor Vitae loft in Ann Arbor. I asked my longtime friend and bandmate Charlie Slick to play the lights for me (as Sagitrronics, his new electronics company). Thanks to Andy Gabrysiak for shooting this.

Love Songs For Lamps - Believer Magazine compilation / roadshow

LOTS OF NEWS OVER HERE! Apologies for the long delay since the last update.

Since then, we have
- gone to NYC with Damned Dogs
- gone on tour with Saturday Looks Good to Me
- gone up to the UP with Swimsuit
- organized and played a bunch of cool gigs here in Michigan

Releases have slowed down, but that's ok. We have more coming soon.

More on all that later. But now some more exciting news!

LOVE SONGS FOR LAMPS compilation

OLD NIGHT is featured on the Love Songs For Lamps cassette compilation that our friend Calvin Johnson put together for the Believer Magazine. I'm really honored and excited to be a part of it. (OLD NIGHT is a cassette I did a while ago (Ginkgo #6), and since that time I have started playing solo shows as SHELLS, which is pretty similar)

This is what the magazine looks like! You can read the liner notes and other stuff at the link above.  I've been listening to the compilation a lot, it's great!

LOVE SONGS FOR LAMPS roadshow

In conjunction with the release of the Believer Music Issue, they have also organized a roadshow with performers from the compilation! This is also in celebration of the 30th anniversary of K Records. Calvin asked me to play the New York show, so I'm headed out there tomorrow!

Show info, courtesy of Todd P:

This will be my first solo appearance in New York! It would be great to see some friends if anyone's around. Even though I've been playing shows as Shells, this one is as Old Night cause that's what the cassette was under. I hope that isn't too confusing for everyone.

Here's a poster for the roadshow, featuring an illustration of yours truly:

GINKGO shows

After 5 years of booking shows at all kinds of places in Michigan, I've decided to start using the GINKGO name for shows as well as for the label. The first show I booked was at the Neutral Zone in Ann Arbor in January 2007, and I haven't really stopped booking shows since then. I was originally hesitant to do that kind of production company branding, but it makes sense to me at this point.

The first show officially listed as GINKGO presents is coming right up, on February 15 2012 here in Ann Arbor:

GINKGO presents...
VERONICA FALLS (UK/Slumberland)
with BRILLIANT COLORS (San Francisco/Slumberland)
and SWIMSUIT
performing live at the Blind Pig 208 S First St Ann Arbor MI
on Wednesday February 15 2012
Doors at 9:30 pm / / 18+
$8 adv / $10 at the door (Advance tickets available to purchase at Encore Records)

Fred made this beautiful poster!

This is going to be a really amazing show, hope to see everyone there!!

We will also be doing another showcase at the Blowout this year, at Atlas Bar on Thurs March 1 with Swimsuit, Wiccans and more TBA.

Cool to see some Ginkgo and related releases on some best of 2011 lists...

Bad Indians "The Path Home" from their single on Ginkgo (GINKGO 8, more info below) on Metro Times favorite local songs of 2011

Bad Indians and Man the Hunter on Current's "Classics of 2011" list

Swimsuit LP on an All Music best of 2011 list...and their post about our record when it came out

Swimsuit, Man the Hunter, and our Old Night cassette on Calvin Johnson's best of 2011 list on Tobi Vail's Jigsaw blog

Not a best of , but here's a review of the Bad Indians single at Foxy Digitalis

Swimsuit has been entered in some sort of battle of the bands contest?

Annarbor.com just did little article too...
